Hi (and welcome),

1. download the ".tar.gz" and install rootsh from repo (via application manager).
2. command:
Code:
tar zxvf the_file_you_want_to_untar
3. cd into the_directory_that_untar_gave
Maybe it is wise to read the README and INSTALL files...
4. command:
Code:
./configure
5. If configure finished without any issue then command:
Code:
make
6.
Code:
sudo gainroot
cd to_the_untared_directory
make install
.

This is the "standard" way.
Disclaimer: I'm not an expert so maybe someone who knows things better should correct me. And - as always - you better know what you are doing...!
Maybe you will need some extra packages or so. Pay attention to the configure messages...

Why do you need root to run make? I have always built everything as user.

Actually, you shouldnt run make as root.

'make install' however, needs root, as user doesnt have permissions to system folders (where make install wants to copy some files to).

Which maemo device?
To install direct from source it will not going right out of the box.
You will need to have at least a compiler.
If you have N900 you could use the following command as root to install pocketsphinx command-line tools.
These packages are only in the devel repository and thus they could eventually not behave right or could eat up root memory, so be careful.

Code:
apt-get install pocketsphinx-utils
If you would like to have python support:

Code:
apt-get install python-pocketsphinx
If you only need sphinx use this command:

Code:
apt-get install sphinxbase-utils
If you need sphinx python support:

Code:
apt-get install python-sphinxbase
