The major benefit for this compatibility is that development of OpenGL ES applications and games will be easier. Instead of having to jump through a bunch of hoops to get a dev environment set up, any OpenGL 4.1 desktop dev environment should be able to run the code, rather than either testing on a device or dealing with a VM

WebGL guys. And we go back to my first post on this thread

(but WebGL implementors usually already had their own GL ES backends, see Google's GLES -> DX9 for a example)

OGL ES 2.0 code was already working with desktop OGL except some minor details(all I can think of is "half float" data type actually). They've probably deprecated some functionality of OGL, like transformation stuff to make the desktop code compatible on mobile too(I couldn't look at spec. yet).
