After playing arround with the icd2 loglevels, I finally got a bit further.
Here comes the problem:

Code:
May 23 15:09:45 (2012) wlancond[2256]: Scan issued
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) wlancond[2256]: Scan results ready -- scan active
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) wlancond[2256]: Scan results (2 APs) to :1.116
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: WLAN: eduroam: AP security algorithm not supported (0x20000181)
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: WLAN: [17690098-fddd-4981-983d-402bf752d3a0] WLAN connect failed: AP security settings not supported (com.nokia.icd.error.network_error)
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: iap 0x6fd98 callback in state ICD_IAP_STATE_LINK_UP with status 3, error 'com.nokia.icd.error.network_error', interface 'wlan0'
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: IAP reports error 'com.nokia.icd.error.network_error'
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: calling link_down function 0x3b5a96e8
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: calling link_down function 0x3b59c1a8
May 23 15:09:47 (2012) icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: EAP: [17690098-fddd-4981-983d-402bf752d3a0] Sending interface stop request
May 23 15:09:48 (2012) EAP[2898]: EAP 2.1.50+0m6 quitting.
So, it's actually: AP security settings not supported (com.nokia.icd.error.network_error)

What does this mean?
Are my settings wrong, or does EAP 2.1.50+0m6 not satisfy my providers requirements?

Update:

Got a bit further.
Just went to a different Eduroam site, where my phone would connect seamlessly.
I guess there might be something wrong/propreitary with the authentification mechanism at my site.
I therefore wrote an email to the technical support to see if they could solve the issue or have further hints.
Thanks and regards,
Chris

It seems there is some variation between different participating schools.

Not sure if it is useful for you, but for me, this worked, as recommended by my university:

WPA EAP
TTLS
no certificate
PAP

I'll see my configurations because I don't have any problem connecting to eduroam at my university.

That doesn't help for me.
Both configuration, TTLS and PEAP, work at the one site, while neither works at the other.
Furthermore, I get the "icd2 0.213.2+0m7[1242]: WLAN: eduroam: AP security algorithm not supported (0x20000181)" log message regardless of what configuration I use, leading me to the conclusion that my actual configuration is not even included when the phone tries to connect to the eduroam network and the phone refuses the connection due to the not supported security algorithm instantly.
I will try to get some further information about the network infrastructure in use here to eventually file a new bug report.
Where would I have to do this? Meego.com appears to be dead, and even though Meego is rather Maemo 6 bugs.maemo.org doesn't seem appropriate...?

another thing to try is to toggle

WPA2
setting in advanced.

In one university I needed it unchecked to be able to connect (otherwise it would prompt for all information again) for the other it needed to be checked.

I have of course tried that as well!
I don't know if it would also connect to the other site if it was checked, but I can definitely not connect to my main site if it was checked or not.
Unfortunately, eapd (which is obviously responsible for the AUTH process) is not very verbose, and I couldn't find a way to get some further details about its behaviour since it seems to be proprietary.
With inception available for the N9 now it might be a solution to replace the full wifi stack with wpa_supplicant... However, I'm unsure if I'm really willing to do this since it appears to be quite some work...
I'm still waiting for a reply of the network administration to get further information on the security procedure implemented here, that might help as well...
