It's the interruption of power supply to the system.
Doing it cleanly (sw reboot / power button) should be less critical than popping out the battery.

The HW interface and flat cable of the 770 LCD is different from the n800 one, we did have at an early stage some adaption wing for using 770 panes on n800 macroboards, but nothing that you could fit in a real device.

About where to get spares, I don't know, I replaced mine with a spare LCD from the lab, but I suspect you might actually find something on google, there are websites specialised in selling replacement LCDs. But stay assured that this would void your warranty, so I see no reason why you would want to take the risk.

thanks, so even sw reboot interrupts power supply, i thought it does not. Well, OK :-)

That's bad. I was thinking about that nice clear n800 display in 770 body.

When device is imported to country where nokia does not sell it, claiming warranty is expensive and chances are low. Also current great n770 deals in ~100EUR/USD price range seem to be a bit problematic with warranty, they seem to move the stock across ocean (on purpose?) so the warranty is void (according to some nokia reps) - expansys in UK sells N770 with US chargers and people who bought in woot/buy.com deal were told their devices are european ones so there is no warranty. I also think few years ahead, n770 is good for many things for years to come.

If this is a known issue with nokias, do they repair outside of 1 year warranty? If not, how much is a replacement screen? I'm in Ireland and mine is a US model, hope they don't get sticky over that... I'd fight them tooth and nail if they tried

tried to find the post with guy having the problem with warranty but cannot find it anymore so better forget it and sorry for rumour. the woot thread is here http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=1370292 there is no easy search but wsod is frequent term http://www.google.com/custom?domains...2Fwww.woot.com
and units are taken for repair and warranty is honored. it is yet to be seen if someone who bought it at expansys UK with US charger will have problem with warranty in UK or not

I just had this happen to me last night... as I was taking pics for my eBay auction to sell it. I picked up an N800 after using the 770 for 1 week. It occurred after I cleared the user settings and upon the reboot.

What bad luck!

I guess I will have to call Nokia

Ah, look at the bright side.. It's under warranty, you've had it less than a month.. chances are you could get a refund instead of a replacement if you went back to the original vendor. Don't suppose it was expansys?

I was one of the woot.com buyers
I thought I had heard before they don't do anything related to warranty/replacement issues but I'll double check before calling Nokia, good idea.

I'm an expansys girl, myself.. contacted them today, they sent me a form to fill, had to choose if I wanted a repair, refund or replacement. I asked for a replacement I like toys, I do.. Miss it already!

Would it make sense to suggest to someone who has just bought a Nokia to reboot 20+ times in a row to spot and exchange the defective ones right away? Or is it something that can happen to all devices, and this practice will only lessen the life of it.

I wish I'd found out about this problem before it occurred to my 770. I've had it less than 2 weeks and it was bought from expansys, they aren't replying to my emails
I actually bought 2 units and the other one arrived with a dead pixel however it actually works...
