Always a good idea, but you need rootsh installed for the commands to succeed in X-Terminal application.
Code:
sudo gainroot
dpkg --configure -a
apt-get install -f
~ $ sudo gainroot
Root shell enabled

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 3:1.10.2.legal-1osso30+0m5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/home/user # dpkg --configure -a
/home/user # apt-get install -f

I'm not sure about the n900 but for the above error what I would do is:

- Delete php5-common_5.2.6-6maemo5_armel.deb from /var/cache/apt/archives/

- Do apt-get install -f after the above

If it still complains about the Post-removal script, do:

dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq php5-common

If still the post-removal script error comes then delete the post-removal script from:

/va/lib/dpkg/info/

The above is what I think should fix it up...

Also try
Code:
sudo gainroot
mkdir /var/lib/php5/
dpkg --configure -a
apt-get purge php5-common
