If someone could post a step-by-step set of directions as to how I can establish a plain serial connection to my phone, that would be awesome.

Right now I'm stuck on

rfcomm connect /dev/rfcomm1 AA:AA:AA:AA:AA:AA 3

(Where the MAC address is correct, copied from hcitool scan)

Giving me "Connection Refused" --- blueserial.sh does the same thing.

you are wrong in syntax. check the syntax rfcomm syntax.

instead of /dev/rfcomm1 you need hci0
