Are there any tweaks to speed this thing up?

It's slower than the second coming of Christ!

I have FAM installed, but occasionally, you have to use HAM, and it's freakin' painful!

apt uses the same repo list/cache as HAM.

use apt-get command in xterm is the fastest way if you know the name of the app you want to install or remove.

apt-get update
apt-get install <appname>
apt-get remove <appname>

I don't see any reasons, why You have to use HAM. Since installing FAM, I never ever used HAM - be it any regular install, or think like CSSU or KP.

As FAM is frontend for apt-get, and HAM is same, but less configurable/slower/worse things, why should anyone?

I _never_ have to use HAM. At least if you disable the update checks.

To speed up HAM, remove unneeded repos.

I guess where I run into it is on the sites that you access an "Install" file from a web browser. It launches HAM.

I guess the answer to that is to DL the Install file and get the package name from it.

Or to use dbus-switchboard and change how system should handle this mime type.
