Rediscovered my old Nokia 770 and got a fresh battery for it. When I attach the charger, the screen lights up "Nokia" but goes dark right away and just cycles like this for a while.

What causes this? Is there hope?

Could be the battery is not as fresh as you think?
Batteries have a limited shelf-life, even when not ever used, so if you managed to find an "original Nokia" battery that was made 10 years ago it most probably does not work any longer.

Thanks! I suppose, but I just had it delivered. Wouldn't it still try to charge it? Do you know what would cause it to light up then give up?

Yes, but to charge inside device the Nxxx needs to load the kernel and boot into a 'charge-only' state. To get to here it needs some juice from the battery.
So maybe you should try to charge that battery with an external charger?

aha--facepalm! Knowing that definitely helps, thank you!
If it's completely out of power, it can't charge? So the screen lights from the external power, tries to boot into the charging state, then chokes because there's no battery? Does this a few times then gives up I guess?

I'm at a loss how to charge the battery if the N770 can't do it

Maybe see this thread

Or just get something like this here:
https://chargewithpower.com/product/...2-n900-online/
please check compatibility and/or look up on ebay. I did not find mine ordered for under 5€ few years ago...

But it could also be that the batt is just flat. Especially if you ordered it like that.

At least with an N9 there's a trick that sometimes works, not sure with 770 though.

If the battery is totally flat and wont have juice to boot up to charging state, and also not possible to use the flasher charging on it, just plug it on and off the charger many times and it just might get trickle-charged in the process far enough to be able to boot to charging state.

You need to do it many times, tens, maybe hundreds even. Plug charger in, when it flicks the lights and dies, remove charger and plug in again... and so on. Eventually it might start charging.

This just worked on my N9 which wouldn't even charge.
I had to do it ~10 times, and suddenly it started booting/charging again.
Thanks!

I didn't even know chargers existed. Thank you!
