Yeah, as stated on wikipedia the Slashdot effect is a generic term which gotten its name from Slashdot. Another example is Streisand effect. The name may imply Barbara Streisand has to be part of the event in order for the event to trigger but that is not the case; merely the event ("effect") is named after her for some reason.

OMG, I would just about kill to get slashdotted, dugg, and reddited all at the same time. The most I've ever gotten is one slashdotting, and a could of diggings. But nothing so much that my server even began to remotely cry uncle. Ah well. If I ever get to be a famous author, maybe that'll become standard practice.
