Sure this works. Take a look at our approach in PirateBox. Long story short create a svg icon, define areas with ids, create a dedicated listener in your application (or watch dbus for signals) and on signal sed the values into your svg file.

hummm..interesting..doesn't seem too hard.

Hmm you would need to get an app done for the specific application...
do you have any in mind? If yes, you should probably contact the devs of it.

I mean I guess it would be a great idea. The problem would be implementing it for the natively installed apps of the phone, if that is where the direction of this topic is to go towards.

I don't know how hard it would be to implement some sort of universal listener for notifications, without modifying native apps' code. :P (not a dev here)

Anyone wanna do a reboot of the 1.3 and modify them for dynamic icons? XD

You /could/ sed the base64 png pattern too. Just prepare for the code to be nigh unreadable.
