I've noticed that my N9 lights up whenever I plug in the headphones, which probably means that the phone knows you've plugged them in.
Is it possible to develop an app/ tweak for automatically launching the music app when you plug in the headphones?

It would be a nice UI touch IMO.

The N900 already had a D-Bus signal (or something similar) triggered for that, so should be really simply.

So its possible? I've submitted a brainstorm for this. Would be great if someone can write a bit of code for this..

you can for example follow changes in this file, as it will show if cable is plugged in or not.

cat /sys/kernel/debug/twl5031_aci/cable
