In the worst case it might increase the cost of each device by a few bucks/euros/pounds, but will leave the pre-order window open for people like Akkumaru and viktor80.
It's reassuring since we all seem to consider an overprovisioning factor of 4 adequate. Due to the critical nature of this very component I even favor to overprovision by factor 10 here, means I want to get 2500, but in the end that's Nikolaus' call.
I told you we will not limit to the exact number of preorders, so there's still some room for late preorders. Don't panic! The window isn't closed in 4 days. But it starts closing, since we now need to do decisions that are based on the assumed number of devices we will be able to sell. So please indicate that you are interested (when you are) by doing a preorder! Otherwise we have poor estimations no matter how hard we try to guess the right numbers. Thanks for your support!

Duly noted May I ask which country? We need such info too, to make the right decisions, thanks for bringing it up here.

So it looks like I am the owner of device #272 then
(just made the preorder, it has been on my shortlist for some time but you know how long these lists tend to get...)

Seems like a perfect job for a 500246471 Molex display connector?

original mail from Nikolaus, which is so awesome I want to share it here (with kind permission)
Connector samples (40 pin)
From: "Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller" To: "Joerg Reisenweber", "Sebastian Krzyszkowiak"
Date: 2014-01-08 13:15

Hi,
I have received the connector samples of the 50024-4071 (40 pin variant).

Here the photos of my experiments and evaluation.

Conclusion: it fits. So we can really buy the 50024-6471 (with only a 0.00001% risk that it still does not fit).

1. on the N900 board

Contact springs:

one 40 pin connector cut and soldered to both ends of the 64 pin footprint of our own board

It fits!

(I think I have plugged it in the wrong orientation but that does not matter for the evaluation result

If you like you can take the photos to make a nice story.

BR,
Nikolaus
On a sidenote from my side: we also received the 2nd generation mech eval PCB yesterday, the ones with moved footprints, adjusted shape and holes etc

The above hack gave me an idea that worst case we actually could build a 64p from 2 ends from one 40p plus a middle 24pin (rather 26, since we'll lose 2 contacts from 40pin for cutting) form a second connector. Just needs very careful cutting and soldering. For soldering we could try and mate a dummy other half to keep the 3 pieces in line and pitch.

Amazing!
2500 x 0.23 = 575
1000 x 1.55 = 1550
It's actually cheaper to buy more and throw away. My teachers were right: capitalism is rotten to the bone! (Yes, I grew up in the workers' paradise behind the iron courtain )

Are you telling us that you want to cut'n'solder 272+ connectors by hand? Wow!
