because your mic/ground contacts is probably bent and shorting out

if you open it up you might be able to bend it back, i don't know.
here's an example of how someone bent it on another phone


found you the replacement part, it's called an "av connector", p/n 5469246

That would be the first thought.. but as he said he had tried with another headphone and the same thing happened.. it is more probable to be the socket.

??? yes, the contacts in the socket are bent, maybe from using cheap headphones, maybe something else.

yeah i spent like 15 minutes trying to figure out what that thing is called. i don't think it's YOUR english, just english in general is failing...
i just looked it up, jack should refer to the part of connector pair that is fixed, mounted, and usually female. but when you search for it online, you find lots of "plugs" (the other half). sad.

Since the warranty for hardly any N900 has expired yet, it's kinda silly to open up the N900 or suggest to do so, because it voids the warranty to do so...

yeah well...
if he sticks a pin into the hole he might be able to fix it, and if he wants to take it in for warranty repair that shouldn't affect anything.
