you need to charge the battery externally and then it will be recognized. this happened to me during the update. if you dont have an external charger some people have luck by keeping the battery out, then plugging in the n900, then insert the battery, and it might be recognized. but a charge is definitly what you need. good luck

interesting. well try the method where you plug in the usb then insert the battery. my updater froze too but i was advised not to unplug. right before i was about to unplug my n900 the updater gave me a quit message. im pretty sure mine was just as bricked as yours but some say its dangerous to unplug while its updating (or crashing). also after mine was fixed i didnt need the software updater to get to the newest firmware. the app manager updated it fine.

The NSU program tends to stall the installation process. It happened to me on the second firmware update. My battery was fully charged and stalled for more than 2 hours on update and ended up buying an external battery charger. If it doesn't boot properly or OS is messed up you won't be able to charge the battery in your N900. Now I just flash.

Take out the battery, disconnect the USB. Put the battery back in, hold U on the keyboard and plug the USB while holding the key, release the U key only when you see the USB icon on the top right corner of the screen.
