The next big question is what "platforms" will be available to get the needed money to you...let alone (pre)purchase. Especially for those living outside the E.U. (souls like me in fact). Will there be Paypal? Money Order? Online Banking Transfer? Credit Cards? (and which ones)...

I don't know if viable, but Finnish http://paytrail.com/ is also providing services like PayPal, only with (probably) better privacy. Too bad the privacy policy is written in finnish, but I can translate a few sections:
  • They collect data improving their service, for statistics and consumer research and for marketing purposes. User can forbid all advertising directed at them
  • All data is sent and stored encrypted to funding facility (Paytrail Oyj). Along with payment details Paytrail receives the subscriber's name, address, e-mail address, phone number and the product details of an order in question.
  • The consumer data is either provided by consumers themselves or along with the order information from the systems of the seller of service or product.
  • Data can be sent to law officials and companies of the same conglomerate within the limits permitted by law.
Data can be sent to outside EU or ETA within the limits permitted by law.
  • All data is appropriately secured electrically and the physical access is restricted and monitored. The usage of registers is restricted and can only be accessed with an username and password. The personnel of Paytrail Oyj and outside agents working for Paytrail Oyj are subject to professional confidentiality.
  • Registree has the right to inspect the kind of data stored about them in the register and can make one free inspection request a year.
The privacy policy of Paytrail Oyj (in finnish):http://paytrail.com/sites/default/fi...ytrail_fin.pdf (maybe customer service can provide an english version?)

Relevant laws (in english):
http://www.finlex.fi/en/laki/kaannok...en19990523.pdf (Finnish law)
http://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/kaannok...en20040516.pdf (Finnish law)
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/...5L0046:EN:HTML (EU law)

Though I don't expect this to be of much use (probably not the best choice) I still went through it because I like this project and because there are never too many options to consider

EDIT: Looking at it more I don't know if the service is even usable outside Finland and Sweden... Nevermind then
EDIT2: They did provide such service for Jolla though, and as far as I know all of Europe had a chance to order... but that might've only been possibly due to collaboration with Invesdor and due to Jolla being a Finnish company. Don't know for sure.

And I really hope that there will be option for bank transfer (SEPA), as for obvious reasons I dont't like paypal and have neither a credit card.

Same here. Although I think I've read somewhere that Goldelico is near Munich, so I could bring the money in person ))

Add. Oberhaching, no less! I could almost go by bike (if I had a good one

Actually, "(...) most of the european (...)", since they do accept projects from the UK.

I suppose that means finding a trusted person in the UK to launch the Project and receive the money, if none of you is from there already...

Happy to support the Neo900 as I like the feel of the N900 and the OS that runs on it. I purchased a few new models from eBay as a backup to my main device.

Hopefully, a few of the bugs will be ironed out also.

Well, ask GCHQ for trustworthy people from the UK.

They should know best, at least for their interest

I can't find it now but in regard to the post about the modem being too big for the case.....would those alternate covers for the extended life batteries be big enough to accommodate the modem? Or has this problem already been solved?

How about support for monitor mode and injection ?

What wireless chipset are you planning on using ?

Hopefully not the Marvell on the GTA04 which is not good for penetration testing.

I think the best wireless chip for this project is the CW1200 chip from ST microelectronics.

Here is the datasheet : http://www.calao-systems.com/reposit...ETS/CW1200.pdf

Specs :

-dual band 5 and 2.4 GHz
-a b g n standards
-host offloading of beacon and packet processing

This chipset is a SoftMAC so that allows for a finer control of the hardware, allowing for 802.11 frame management to be done in software, for both parsing and generation of 802.11 wireless frames. Thus, monitor mode and injection is 100% supported.

Open source driver accepted in the Linux kernel mainline with above penetration testing functionality :

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/cw1200

I have no connection with ST microelectronics but I think it would be IDEAL if we can use this driver because N900 can do monitor mode and if Neo900 cannot then it would be a real shame / feature downgrade and I will not be buying it personally if it does not have this feature.

Maybe you can source the Azurewave NH-580 chip which has GPS / FM / BT provided by chip CG2900 and then WLAN by chip CW1200 all in one package etc. http://www.azurewave.com/product_AW-NH580_1.asp

Please make an effort to get a chip like this !

We will try to find a solution that supports monitor and injection, since that's of course an important feature and we want to use those devices ourselves as well.
For SOFTMAC: while it's fine for hacking, it ruins standby time since it needs active CPU all the time. We need a chipset that has both, softmac and hardmac. AIUI the "offloading" quoted by you is exactly a hardmac feature (unless they meant "offloading from wlan chipset to APE")

We also will see what can get done regarding 802.11a (5GHz) - the antenna in N900 case is not made for that, we need to test it and hope for a 5/8 tuning of the lambda/4 antenna.
