Interesting, I just got it to launch the gui. I couldn't see any map but I could navigate the menu's, setting etc.
When I looked at xterm, it showed that it was using /etc/navit/navit.xml. Weird.
I uninstalled Navit, reinstalled and now the /etc/navit/ directoryt is empty... Now I can't get the gui to launch again.

Oh thats a pitty, as navit does give valuable infos:

& navit
navit:main_real:Using '/home/user/.navit/navit.xml'
navit:tracking_update:failed to get position data
navit:tracking_update:failed to get position data
navitsd_std_click:calling command 'zoom_in()'

This is what I get:

~# navit
navit:navit_init:no gui
navinit:main_real:Using '/etc/navit/navit.xml'

I do have the navit.xml at that location.
I also tried launching navit specifying a different location. Still same.
It seems it fails to load the gui even before trying the xml file.

Ok, I removed the version from my server. I for myself use the testing package :-)

Again I work as translator for busy petabyte between meruser.de and maemo.org:

Howto install navit from testing:

Install navit from testing repository via app manager
(If navit-gui-internal is too unstable install also navit-gui-gtk)

Code:
cd /home/user
mkdir .navit
cp /etc/navit/navit.xml /home/user/.navit/navit.xml

# Download OSM data
cd /home/user/MyDocs/
wget http://deelkar.dev.openstreetmap.org/maps/osm_germany.bin
echo '<map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/home/user/MyDocs/osm_germany.bin"/>' > /home/user/.navit/maps.xml

# Install and adjust voice navigation (Here for Germany)
apt-get install espeak sed
echo '<speech type="cmdline" data="echo '%s' | sed s/\\./Komma/g | sed s/\meters/meter/g |espeak -vde+m2+croak" cps="10"/>' > /home/user/.navit/speech.xml

# when icons for menu are missing install librsvg2-common (extra-devel)
apt-get install librsvg2-common
I *think* that the xpm directory of the testing navit package is broken (many 0-bytes png files) I used my own icon package for the last screen-shot

You can lay out all the same. Deb and instructions on how to run Navit on N900?
In Extras-Devel did not find it. Compile a PC is not possible (Win7)
Thanks in advance!
