My 2nd phone is a oldie but goldie Nokia E51 - slim, tiny, long battery life, s60v3 so has everything a smartphone needs.

Been using the htc mytouch 4g for a couple of months after using the g2. Its a nice phone ,though just not the os I prefer to run

the samsung vibrant is a nice phone...pretty beefy too if you're into big phones and just like @tekplay said. i know when i get my n900 i'm goin to get just a little phone to have as a back up but somethin that has a built in qwerty pad(need to text lol). where do you think you'll be traveling?

It really depends on how you plan on using your second phone. If you only want it for simple functions such as calling people and texting in a well controlled sandbox, then go with the cheap options as others have suggested. If playing with the hardware and ability to modify the software is more important then I would recommend a second N900 despite your caveat not to suggest it.
