Seeing the numbers graphically over time you could probably see when Nokia delivered mentionable numbers of devices and how that impacted the use of additional software. This would be exactly the thing manager need to decide "yes, we will join this market".

Of course you may not mention the ovi-store desaster, this makes best marketing turn top down.

And to think that the Ovi Store was only introduced 2-3 firmware updates after release... how can these figures be!!

I think it's clear where users of N900 want to get their apps from. In fact, I feel that the repos are more logical and intuitively learnable than the whole Ovi business. For the very reason of the repos the N900 received a lot of (negative) heat before the N900 came out, atleast among my customers and friends.

And I believe they starting counting downloads from day 1 for Maemo 5.

It may be worth noting though that "downloads" can most probably only refer to all downloads, including the regular updates you get when you already have an application installed on your device. So if you installed only one single application from Extras and it got updated twice since then, you would be counted 3 times: 3 downloads instead of 1 application downloaded. That's technically correct and no less impressive, but it's just two different things and one has to know.
Even though users may have downloaded the same app 3 or more times, 4000000 is still an extremely substantial number, taken into account the total lack of applications available for the n900. In all I'd say the current number of apps and games for the n900 range from like 1000 - 2000apps ..... or less.

Some more statistics: the Maemo versions, the most popular applications for the respective version and the number of downloads for this one application:

OS2006: MPlayer (18079)
OS2007: MPlayer (14834)
OS2008: Other Maemo Weather (180150)
Maemo 5: FM Radio Player (188916)

Comparing the numbers of OS2006 (last 770-Version) to those of OS2008 (last N8x0-version) is already interesting. But Maemo 5 beats them all, even though it's only 4 months old while OS2008 started in Nov. 2007 and probably still sees downloads from N8x0-users now.
