Is it possible to remove the shading effect on the top of the lockscreen? I find it quite annoying with some wallpapers.

I have done some poking around the css file for the lockscreen and low power screen to adjust things like the font and date format, but haven't found anything that looks promising.

I don't think it is called 'shading' (at least find couldn't find it), but I will have a poke around and see what I can find.

For posterity, the relevant file is:

/usr/share/themes/blanco/meegotouch/images/meegotouch-lockscreen/meegotouch-lockscreen-top.png

It needs to be replaced and not just removed. A 120x120 fully transparent image is recommended.

I never thought that it is a shadow.

Or you can "sed" background-image: "meegotouch-lockscreen-top"; to background-color: transparent;
from /usr/share/themes/sepiatp/meegotouch/libsysuid-screenlock-nokia/style/libsysuid-screenlock-nokia.css
