I know this is probably a silly question. Search has yielded a lot of suggestions along the lines of USB to LAN or LAN to WiFi adapters, but I was hoping for something more direct. Solder pads on the motherboard, perhaps? I don't mind canibalizing one of my guinea pigs

you could take apart the USB->LAN adapter, and solder it inside the housing I guess. Would be a neat hack

Yeah, but that woud use up the one USB. Unless I hack apart and solder in a USB hub too. I already have a use for that USB port

Even better, I've always wondered if it'd be possible to hook up one of those USB docking stations to the phone; maybe something like this one:

I would like to point, that in (short) OP it's clearly stated, that author is aware of Ethernet-to-USB/Ethernet-to-WiFi solutions, and question is about creating *direct* RJ45 port.

Now, for the answer - AFAIk, it's impossible. I have no idea if i2c could be used for that purpose (probably not), but even then, access to it would require getting rid of other useful components. Otherwise, we would need to hook directly to SoC, which is approach unrealistic in practice, unless you own a fab station that can desolder and assembly N900 from scratch.

Unless I'm missing something, so *subscribes*.
