I had a look at the slashshot thread. I felt ashamed. For them.

We have come to a point where some pseudo-nerds think an Android phone with some shitty "custom ROM" is something comparable to the N900 or to the Neo900.

I know it might make sense from a business point of view (if this actually manages to attract any interested people). But holy f*ck. Today I'll allow myself to be elitist and think: we don't f*cking need anyone else.

I'd rather buy 5x Neo900 to block some bas^H^H^H******s from getting one!

Hm...slashdot negative comments once read...and looking at the content ..
99.9% are from individuals who know nothing about the neo...who have read up really nothing on the neo ...they haven't done their "due diligence" so-to-speak.
This is an excellent example of the need for real good pr ...
the last thing the public need is to try to make an informed decision based on misinformation coming from individs who think they are commenting from a position of knowledge..
when more than 3/4 of what they are saying in their posts is either blatantly false or coming from a position of pure ignorance.
I see right now ..on slashdot alone...some of our fellow maemoans are speaking up and enlightening, informing,... "righting" (so-to-speak) the skewed statements coming from some there.
which is good.
Better would be serious PR needed now.
This is most definitely the moment not to let the cart control the horse.

Android has nothing to do with L̶i̶n̶u̶x GNU/Linux.

I felt the exact same way. What an irritating \. thread. I feel like everyone there just completely missed the mark, and that Sebastian had to defend the Neo to people who have 0 clue.

Android/iPhone/Tizen it doesn't matter, it's all meaningless. The only option for a phone I have right now is the n900 and the only option I'll consider in the future is the Neo900. That's it, end of story. There is no comparison between Android and the Neo, it would be like comparing the GTA04 to a banana.

That thread has made me frustrated and angry...

"There is no comparison between Android and the Neo, it would be like comparing the GTA04 to a banana."
Pretty decent analogy...
Not bad man...not bad at all..
Add a cold spaghetti (still in the colander) helmet to somebody in the analogy ...
and it'd be something I'd say...
8 points.
If it helps mike..use that good humour of yours..don't get too upset..
It's not worth high blood-pressure and a reduced lifespan.

I'll have to correct that for you;

Android has everything to do with Linux; I doubt you could really run an android device with any other kernel... (except heavily patched bsd variant I suppose...)

Android is just another Linux distribution, albeit having radically different userland from what people usually have with GNU/Linux.

Some people think that it is the userland that defines a system... well that is just your opinion then, and you should call your apples apples and oranges oranges, then I suggest calling your standard distribution GNU/Linux and android Bionic/Linux.

That is rather extreme. Of course there is a comparison. They are both mobile phones/portable computing devices, just like a supercar and a public transport bus are both vehicles. Both can get you from A to B just like both Neo and a random Android can make a call.

Thete are supercars that are horribly uncomfortable, lack any modern amenities and guzzle fuel like a rocket. And they sell for hundreds of thousands of $/£/€. One can ask, why? Why would you spend megabucks on an uncomfortable car when you can buy a bus ticket for a few bucks and get there in a comfy seat, with A/C and driven by someone else?

You wouldn't believe it, but there are people who think it's worth it. They must be mad.

Personally I'm perfectly fine with the supercar.. As long as its board computer is not running Android, then I would feel cheated

Pichlo, I think you're missing my point. The reason why I (personally) consider the Android a banana is because it's not even in the realm of mobile OSes/devices I would ever consider.

I'm suggesting that it's fundamentally flawed in it's technical and philosophical design, and the fact that slashdot commenters were using Droid devices as a substitute to the Neo "missed the mark." They were lamenting the £990 price on the claim "why would I spend £990 on the Neo when I could get a Nexus for half that?" Well in my mind that's a flawed comparison!
