When I reboot my n900, I am asked for a PIN code. I type this in and the phone boots as normal. What exactly is the Lock code in Settings for and what is the code? I have never set the Lock code and my phone was brand new. I tried to use my PIN but it wont accept it.

Check the manual - IIRC it's 12345 by default. The code can be used to secure the device, similar to a PC's BIOS password. It has nothing to do with your SIM's PIN.

you can disable it by going into settings...device lock
