I received this set of instructions to install a chat client: Gaim for the N800. It works pretty well. Hope this helps.

1) open application manager ("others menu" -> tools -> application manager)
2) when it opens, open the menu, and choose tools -> application catalogue
3) press "new" and fill in the following to the fields:
Catalogue name: maemo hackers
Web address: http://maemo-hackers.org/apt
Distribution: mistral
Components: main
leave "disabled" unchecked and press ok
4) press "new" again and fill in the following:
Catalogue name: maemo
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: bora
Components: free
leave "disable" unchecked again and press ok
5) press "close"
6) when a dialog pops up asking you if the package list should be
refreshed, press ok
7) press "browse installable packages" button
8) press "applications" button
9) select "maemo-gaim" and press "Install" from the toolbar
10) click ok to the two dialogs that pop up
11) after the install is complete, go back to browse installable
packages, this time select "Protocols"
12) now install all the protocol packages you need the same way that the
main package was installed

now you should be good to go, you can start maemo-gaim from "others
menu" -> extras.

Cheers, and good luck
