Nokia and eCompany offer joint iZone promotion
http://www.ameinfo.com/65305.html
>>>iZones are WiFi 'hotspots' located throughout the UAE where residents and visitors alike can log on to a high-speed wireless network to access the internet.

>>>Between now and the end of October, consumers who purchase a Nokia 9500 Communicator - which uses smart-rendering technology for fast and effective WiFi Internet browsing on a wide, rich colour screen - will receive a free iZone Prepaid card worth Dhs. 120 for a full 12 hours of wireless iZone access. The card can be used to log on to the Internet at iZones for 60 days from the date of the first log on.
-- UAE = United Arab Emirates. For those of us who thought America has been on the cutting edge, I got news for you: Thanks to the non-policies of this current Administration, we have fallen to just about *Third World status* in telecommunications. Japan, to cite one example, offers broadband that is SIXTEEN TIMES our speed at ONE-HALF THE PRICE. Now aren't you feeling silly for laughing at Al Gore pimping the "Information Superhighway"? At least *he* knew it *existed*!

-- edited to add:

GSM Arena: The Nokia N90 is one of the top 10 best photo mobiles.
http://www.symplification.com/node/206
>>>Indeed, the conclusion seems to be that the N90 is one of the best phone cameras around. This is a very very safe conclusion, because it is only the 2nd phone with a >1.3MP sensor and autofocus to have been released worldwide.
-- Nokia's other posh phone.

Has the notebook-to-handheld conversion begun?
http://news.com.com/2102-1005_3-5815...=st.util.print
>>>The push behind the trend comes from the confluence of several factors favorable to handhelds. First, the devices themselves and the data networks that carry traffic are far more sophisticated than they were several years ago. Corporate applications such as databases and customer relationship management (CRM) software can also be accessed through handhelds.
-- hello 770!

Casinos Wager on Handhelds
http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,68399,00.html
>>>CARSON CITY, Nevada -- It won't be long before gamblers are shooting dice while queued up waiting to see their favorite comedian. Or playing poker and roulette under a poolside umbrella. Even a trip to the buffet will no longer keep casino patrons from playing slots. A law signed last month by Gov. Kenny Guinn made Nevada the first U.S. state to approve the use of wireless, handheld gambling devices at its hotel-casinos.
-- hello again 770!

Nokia Theatre Times Square Set for September New York City Debut
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...2005,+10:49+AM
>>>Nokia Theatre Times Square, located at 1515 Broadway, the corner of Broadway and 44th Street in the Viacom/MTV building, will be an innovative, multi-use theater that can be transformed to accommodate a wide array of events including concerts, live television and web broadcasts [...]

>>>Included in the theatre will be the Nokia Lounge which will provide a relaxing atmosphere where guests and fans will have the opportunity to charge their wireless phones, get hands-on experience with new Nokia products and services, download mobile content like games, videos and ring tones and enter promotions among other activities. In addition, Studio Red, a division of Rockwell Group, have created a three dimensional connection between great entertainment and the Nokia Mobile experience with the Nokia Lounge, Vision Wall and equalizer.
-- so, that's a mystery now solved. Right, when will Morrissey appear?

Nokia N-Gage QD Available In Silver
http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=1554
>>>Today Nokia announced that it will be releasing a special "Silver Edition" N-Gage QD handset in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Other than the color, the device is no different from the original QD that was announced back in April of 2004. Nokia expects the silver QD to be available in retail outlets on September 1st of this year.
-- the N-Gage matters in that it shows Nokia's determination to create a market and try to make it work. Time will tell with this one.

Nokia 770 Internet Tablet - A Real Cutie

Aside from lacking Java, many people feel another fault of the 770 is that it lacks an IR port. Many people, seeing this as a device to use at home while watching TV, would like to also use it as a universal remote. This makes a lot of sense.

One reason I'd personally like to see an IR port on a future model is that I use this a lot:

I hope Nokia is reading this!

200 KBPS is Not Broadband
http://gigaom.com/2005/08/02/200-kbps-is-not-broadband/
>>>According to TeleTruth, the U.S. is actually 16th in the world in terms of broadband connectivity.
-- following up on my earlier comments about the US being at Third World-level in terms of our telecom.

>>>In truth, the U.S. is 16th in terms of real broadband penetration, after just about every other developed country in the world. This is absolutely ridiculous. Oh, but wait! We have 3G and CDMA running at 100 kbps in an open field on a clear day 50 feet from a cell tower. We’re living in Future Town! Robot, fetch me my food pills.

Startups vie to make Linux more attractive with bundled offerings

>>>San Francisco (InfoWorld) - Integrating open source applications is a task daunting enough to lead some companies toward proprietary products. To that end, a several startups this week revealed plans to offer prebuilt, certified solutions so customers have fewer integration migraines
-- very interesting. The kind of apps they mention just cry out for a client that will run on the 770 to allow wireless DB queries.

An open-source misstep at IBM?
>>>Nobody's questioning the massive contributions IBM makes to open source. But it goes to show how the open-source label can give and take away.
-- heed this, Nokia! Tread lightly! MS will be waiting for you to trip up -- like unintentionally alienating the Open Source whizzards.

I am hoping for an IR too! How can we now beam contacts and memos from a Nokia cellphone to the Nokia 770? And how will I be able to use the Think Outside IR keyboard?

Mike, several from maemo-developers was asking for your blog to be added to Maemo Planet. vBulletin can only create RSS feeds from threads not posts. I'll try to create a script to generate an RSS for your blog.

I wanted IR too. It would be great with my IR keyboard. Plus the idea of a universal remote is very tempting. This would be my couch device.

One thing I think attracted me to the 770 is the design. It just looks so cool. I am tempted by nice looking stuff. Heck I bet thats why I have a Zodiac. My list for stuff the next 770 is growing.

I pity the fools who come across this ersatz blog via RSS. Why try to destroy RSS like that?! And I don't see any info here that'd be of use to devs.

Don't forget: We can't even Bluetooth "beam" contacts and stuff, because 770's can't link via BT for security reasons. They can link via WiFi, though, but I don't know how transferring contacts and such would work. We need a dev who either has two devices or two devs who are in the same area to try out this WiFi linking business and to report on it.

While I'm here, I might as well mention a display bug I'm encoutering using Firefox. The forun software seems to extend beyond the border of the rounded "panel" display (the width of the itT logo) when I'm creating/previewing messages. Anyone else have this?

Shell names Nokia outgoing CEO as non-exec chairman
http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/news...ERGY-SHELL.xml
>>>AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell has chosen Jorma Ollila, chairman and chief executive of Finnish cellphone company Nokia, to be its non-executive chairman from June 1, 2006, the oil giant said on Thursday.
-- ow. Jorma, how can you do something So Major Dumb like this? It was you who made Nokia into an enviro-friendly global leader. And now you intend to pimp for an *oil* company? Do you *really* want to be splattered with the mess of the Middle East? Do you *really* want to lead a (no pun intended) dinosaur of a company? Do you *really* want to be seen as one of the enemies of alternative energy sources that are more earth-friendly and which would free us from the Oil Sheiks? Someone tell me I am hallucinating this.
