It happened to me twice.. One on the previous system version and one today after system update.
Just played with different ambiences and in one moment I noticed that phone without sounds. Can't play music, no notifications sounds etc.
Pressing on the volume buttons just show me "Muted"...
Tried to restart different processes like ambienced, lipstik etc, nothing help, but simple reboot restored all back.

Someone know which process exactly we can restart to get the sounds back without reboot ? I believe that should be simple solution for this..
Thanks

Finally I found solution how to fix this problem
I created simple packaged for this: https://openrepos.net/content/schturman/mute-fixer

Explanation:
1. somehow ownership of this folder: /run/user/100000/pulse changed to root:nemo
2. I changed it back to nemo:nemo
3. restarted systemctl-user restart pulseaudio.service
4. All actions:
Code:
su
(your root pass)
killall jolla-gallery
killall jolla-mediaplayer
systemctl-user stop pulseaudio.service
chown nemo:nemo /run/user/100000/pulse
systemctl-user start pulseaudio.service

I wonder what has caused this, some rogue application or bug in OS?

don't know exactly... I just installed ambiences and switched between them. I did it so many times and never happened something, but yesterday after system update I played again with switching between ambiences and in one moment I noticed that phone without sounds..

P.S. Also played Temple run2 (android app)

I encountered one issue though ... it was an audio swap & not a mute.
In my case, all the application's sounds began to play over the feeble ear-facing speaker.

I was messing around with the CSD Diagnostics app.. and looks like it did the swap and did not clean up after I killed the app.
Messing around once again with the audio settings (clicking one of the "xxxx playback" options, solved the issue.
