We know the standard email widget has issues with the way Nokia Messaging works.

According to the bug report,
"Email home applet must not display email subjects, this is specified in the
internal User Interface specification that is not planned to be changed. Here
is the quotation:
"Messages received in Nokia Messaging accounts, if any, are not displayed in
the applet. Only a Nokia Messaging Header row is displayed, showing the total
amount of new messages for all Nokia Messaging accounts. Tapping on the header
row opens the Nokia Messaging accounts list. The row is always displayed last
in the list."

As far as I understand this requirement was defined due to legal restrictions
for Nokia Messaging Service accounts.
So how about we make a widget for Nokia messaging. My e63 has two messaging widgtets. One for Nokia Messaging and another for mfE.
Can a similar system be implemented?

Good idea. But I have couple of questions.

Wouldn't the same legal restrictions (if any) apply to the new widget as well?

Is the Nokia Messaging closed source? If yes, is there a way to get a summary of new emails from the local database it uses?

Symbian has a similar widget so I doubt there'd be legal issues.

The gmail notification is from Nokia messaging

we shouldn't give up on nokia fixing this themselves, so far they haven't provided an adequate reason as to why this thing is pretty much useless on the n900
on the other hand, it doesn't hurt to take a look at the source or start harassing them for the api calls if it's closed. the messaging plugin for the e71 was pretty weird, they had the widget built into the firmware update because i guess the phone didn't properly support real widgets. hopefully they haven't screwed us in some new way here...
if needed we can always find other ways of doing things, but for now we should try and focus on using as much of their resources as possible.

I really doubt the widget can be patched to support Nokia Messaging without screwing up everything else.

For instance, it take two clicks to view my messages from Gmail using IMAP.
But it takes 3 clicks to view my messages from yahoo using Nokia Messaging.

I think the widget goes 2 clicks and retrieves new messages. A new widget for Nokia messaging could do 3 clicks

there's always a way if we have the source, but who knows what they've done
it's here somewhere i think:
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/fre...3-3+0m5.tar.gz

-edit-
this file looks like a good place to start:
\src\widgets\modest-folder-view.c

it's pretty well commented, although makes little sense to me since i don't know c (anymore)

stuff like this isn't exactly raising my confidence of an easy fix:
Code:
/* TODO: this could cause a lock at startup, so we
comment it for the moment. We know that this will
be a bug, because the INBOX is not selected, but we
need to rewrite some parts of Modest to avoid the
		   deathlock situation */
/* TODO: check if this is still the case */

/* this feels dirty; any other way to expand all the root items? */
lots of stuff that says "fixme" too.
i appreciate their coders putting some honest comments at least.
i hope they get around to fixing this themselves, I'd be embarrassed if users were fixing my code.

i think the way to fix this is to automatically make a hidden inbox out of all the newest emails from whatever other inboxes exist. Then just get the desktop widget to display those instead. unfortunately the code is hard for me to figure out, there's a hell of a lot of files, and way too much stuff called a widget in there...

Yes, the Modest plugin it uses is closed (which I can understand, TBH).
But the email desktop applet is also closed.

Good luck convincing someone to reimplement Nokia's **** from scratch.

Not to hijack the thread but my email widget seems to have a problem. When I click on the screw driver to change settings nothing happened. Has always been that way for me since the widget arrived with PR 1.2. S does anyone know how to fix the widget?

It will only work if you have multiple accounts. Nokia Messaging counts as one account
