Since the N900 can't act as a bluetooth client for tethering, I wonder if anyone has had success with a data only / tablet sim service for it. I've read it could work if you activate a sim in a tablet and then switch to a phone. I use T-Mobile and am thinking about trying it out. But if there's a data-only service in the U.S. that could work I'd like to hear about it. Especially if it's contract free.

If you look at the BT tethering scripts just reverse them to tether the N900 to another phone or device. I think most data-only plans will charge a high rate if you try to make a phone call and maybe force you onto a bad voice plan for that month, that was my experience with Orange, the US mobile market is pretty insane so who knows.

Unfortunately "just" reversing the bluetooth scripts is above me. But thanks.

Sorry, I think there is a pair of BT scripts to tether a linux computer to the N900, apply the 'computer' script to the N900 and then engage the tablet's BT tethering app and it should work.
I don't remember where the script is on TMO, though there are several on different linux help sites, if you link it I can help.
You also need to know if your app uses PAN or DUN.

The N900 does USB-tethering out of the box on Linux and Mac, so for me there's no need for Bluetooth tethering.

The N900 is my UMTS modem with a data-only contract-free SIM on T-Mobile (Germany) where I pay once per every day I use it and have a "flat" rate (throttled after 1 GB) on that day.

I don't know about the situation in the US, though, but I imagine similar data plans do exist.

T-Mobile U.S. has a similar plan for $3 per day used but they throttle at 200 MB and throw in unlimited minutes and texts (neither of which I need )

T-Mobile has a $30 per month unlimited data plan (throttled to 2G after 5GB) that also includes 100 minutes of talk and unlimited texting.

(Of course, that averages out to be less than 200MB per day for the entire month to avoid throttling.)

Great and apt term isn't it?
"throttling"
