What makes a N9 bereft of Meego that much different from say a Samsung or One+ glass slab phone?

Answer: nothing at all, you've put that right.

Untill of course HMD Global were to finally put Jolla Sailfish on it and start influencing & assisting Jolla's Sailfish development to become the VERY core of all future HMD Global devices to be what the N9 , N950 could and should have been close to a decade ago: two complementary productivity smartphone phones that everybody craves and that feeds again non stop speculating about the bright future of mobile.

To be fair, the N9 had a really nice size which isn't available in new phones these days. But, yeah, I get your point.

As in everything is now a gigantic 1mx60cmx1mm tablet phone?
At some point they stopped being primarily phones or even computers and became big brittle facebook and youtube terminals.

i gotta say, SFOS on Xperia X Compact is pretttty close to the N9 experience (not as good IMO, but the closest you can get on modern hw)

also, nokia has a pretty awful track record with bootloaders... the N9's firmware flasher was like the worst thing ever.

so, as a SFOS port is pretty dang unlikely, id say this thread would be more at home on a site called talk.android.com...

Yeah the difference from an Android phone with AMOLED + Standby Screen (that they've finally caught up with) would be the form factor but also I'm assuming that they'd customise the multitasker/home setup to emulate the N9's swipe UI as closely as possible, which would be amazing. Plus having a swipe UI is really helped out by having the curved body edges and the screen that flows in - it feels much more natural on an old N9 than a Jolla C for example.

One big thing: With Meego you don't have to accept "Privacy" statement of G. And you get SDK-mode.

But anyway I like more Maemo than Meego. And more N900 or N950 than N9.
