Just to close off my issue (no blinking LED), it was a problem with Powerlaunch, not with Modest. It took me a while to realize that Powerlaunch had killed my LEDs and my alarms. Thanks for the troubleshooting help, folks.

there is a reason why i stopped bothering with powerlaunch ones i found out i could get a reboot entry by editing a file
