Is there already a log file or app that will tell me which background application is periodically bringing up the GPRS connection ?

If you haven't tinkered with connections in the settings you will periodically attempt to tether to whatever connection you can.

Settings > Internet Connections > Connect Automatically - set it to "Always Ask".

Hmm. Set to 'any' and '60 minutes', with 'switch to WLAN' on (but there's no wireless here right now).

I use AutoDisconnect, so that drops the connection when it comes up.

So this is just the N900 doing it's thing ? Is there anyway to set a longer search interval ?

As I said, if you want it to stop connecting automatically then set it to "Always Ask". That will disable the auto-connect and every time you want to go onto the internet you have to choose your access point. It's how I have mine set and it never auto-connects, removing the need for auto-disconnect.
