My initial thought - more than ever, it's important that maemo.org be moving forward with developing open software for mobile devices as a specific long-term objective.

What's probably really happened is the hardware manufacturers said:

"Waghhh! Cheap chinese manufacturers are using Android on cheap hardware devices and we cannot compete with that.

Waghhh! The android phone marketplace is too competitive and we're having trouble maintaining our hardware sales

Waghhh! We don't want that situation again with the growing tablet market"

Hardware manufacturers wipes snot from noses and then says:

"Wagggh! If you (google) don't do something about it we will take our hardware and go elsewhere"

Google cuddles hardware manufacturers and says:

"There, there. Mummy kiss it better. We will keep the source of the tablet platform to ourselves and you can then play as much as you want.

We'll keep those nasty-wasty cheap hardware manufacturers away form your playpit. If they don't like it they can make their own"

Enter Meego......

Well, rigt now Android Honeycomb is effectively "closed" source. Doesn't mean it'll stay that well, but even if they open source it, this just reemphasizes all the ways in which it's not truly FOSS - the free bit being the most problematic, since even if their (Google's) rationale is true, what the hell? We're not releasing the source because it's not meant for phone use and dear god someone might chose to stick it on a phone anyway? Wha...? The definition of open isn't just about what you can do with a chunk of code when it's available, but also it's about not making decisions like that for your users.

It's either poorly thought out bs, or it's cover for something else bs.
