That was my reading of your post too, hence my thanks. OTOH, I also liked endso's comprehensive summary hence my thanks to his post too. I do not see the two posts in opposition

No worries delmar.
No offense taken at all.
Nor did I desire any post from myself to be defensive or protective or any kind of knee-jerk response also.
But rather meant it to be a good summing-up of the 20/20 hindsight of what seems to be very obvious (and repetitious) traps, weaknesses, and pitfalls that projects / corps. should avoid in their behaviour ...and that anyone who doesn't pay attention ..can fall in.
Rather cautionary.
(Actually if I had a project / corp ...the 1st thing I would do is put signs above every door in the place with examples written of enterprises which failed and the reasoning. Essentially burning into everyone's head daily ...what to avoid...so it would become subconscious in everyone...kinda like the warnings in unexplored areas on maps....hic sunt dracones...not meant to avoid challenge or the unknown...but rather to be aware ...)

actually my choices were write what I did
or
try to find a video clip of homer simpson running around screaming whilst on fire and superimpose Nokia and Jolla logos on him (hehee)
(since that is the overriding image in my head every time I hear "burning platform")
Sadly I couldn't find any clips of homer running around on fire (you'd think there would be a TON of them)
so had to opt out of humour and sadly had to opt in for verbiage.
So yeah...no offense taken...no offense meant either by myself...
no harm - no foul.

Please refer to http://neo900.org/estimate
For "how final is that" we're about to publish a "Neo900 finances and crowdfunding" report that basically concludes we need more preorders to keep the pricetag we are aiming at. No surprise when you compare the recent numbers (see post above) to the 500 we took as basis for our calculations, and then count in the PP disaster.

Hi! I have a few questions / fun ideas about the hardware design to pass the time...

1. Is it possible to select the boot device (eMMC / flash) at all, and could that pin (SYS_BOOT5 I think?) be exposed, maybe on the Hackerbus next to the UART? In a talk called ARM Snowflakes about test automation, Neil Williams stressed the importance to have an accessible UART (which the Hackerbus will have I believe), and mentioned it is great if an external test machine is able to toggle the boot device also. It could make un-bricking the device easier too?

2. Is it possible the other Hackerbus GPIOs could be chosen so that they could be configured (via pin muxing) as an SPI interface? e.g. to use the neo900 to flash SPI/BIOS chips (or maybe even emulate one)? Or, are there ideas to use different GPIO pins for some other purpose?

3. What non-volatile memory exists across the entire board? What means (if any) are available to disable or make those read-only if that is desired? (I started thinking about this following Joanna Rutkowska's 32C3 talk and State considered harmful paper.)

4. Does anyone have a link, for the method of intercepting mobile phone voice data by measuring a very slight modulation of RF power (e.g. WLAN transmissions)? Could the power supply to the neo900's RF components be filtered to mitigate that somehow (e.g. some kind of low-pass)?

That has been my thought as well,
hopefully there could be a wikipedia page
with something like the ' top 100 priorities for new projects"
and its inverse 'the top 100 mistakes for new projects'.
Human tendency is to oversimplify such things
to a 'top ten' list but ten is just an advertising gimmick
aimed at people who are mentally couch-surfing.

Surely there are thousands of such caveats and recommendations,
but if they could be sifted to a manageable view -by priority-
then the business world could probably advance quit a bit.

Google (and duckduckgo) is not much help for this concept.

This is a concept only barely recognized at linkedin [2015 june 05]
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/twent...roject-kerzner

because mainstream linkedin folk are always touting
'my fix is the big fix you never heard of and need me to tell you'
rather than trying to sift and prioritize and then rank.

Any real business folk prefer to be able to scan lists
sorted by importance rather than dig through a
endlessly redecorated Hodge-podge regurgitation of randomly remembered cliches.

Why is this important ?
Aside from such obvious problems like Jolla, neo900,
Pyra and others, I have to go through this with my own projects.

That the concept is brought up here shows at least we recognize herewith the neo900
just how easy it is to fail and how difficult it is to actually create something from scratch,
without the awesome infrastructure of an already profitable existing organization such as Nokia, Google or Apple.

{Not to mention that I also am currently mapping out a new project}

Neo900 (like N900) already is unbrickable by design. It's also designed to be inherently secure, see http://projects.goldelico.com/p/neo9...es/678/#ic2091

I'll answer the remaining questions later on

The Pandora, which has the same processor and the same principal designer (i.e. Nikolaus) as the Neo900, has the sys_boot5 pin linked to the START button. This means that if one holds down that button while powering on, the system boots from the SD card rather than the internal Flash. I, for one, find this very useful.

If it is not already happening on the Neo900, I would like Nikolaus to please consider it.

The "principal design" of Neo900 is under my responsibility, Nikolaus is helping a lot and doing the hard lifting. Please see last post of mine and the link in there to the project's bugtracker, for details how we gonna handle SYS_BOOT[5:0] and rationale why we do it this way and not the way it's done in pandora. Emphasis of Neo900 is on security and privacy, not on gaming and development.

cheers
