So the short answer is: I am trying to tackle this now and I think I have a fix.
The long answer is: This is a bit problematic. Assume the following case:
1) switch GPS and geotags on when is active
2) network connection dialog pops up
3) camera+ becomes non active and disables gps and geotags
4) network connection dialog disappears
5) camera becomes active again and switches on gps and geotags
6) repeat step 2.
I hope I managed to get a fix for that but let's see if it really fixes it.

The problem of the icons/ui not showing up properly and needing a reboot to fix has got me thinking... "this is Linux why should I have to reboot just to see a dang icon"
I wonder if this would resolve that issue...
I'm a little busy to test it right now, but will a bit later and let you know.

EDIT: Pretty sure the probs I saw weren't related, but still test it anyway.
I'd say the options are:
- force reboot -> evil and I don't know how to do it
- regenerate theme cache -> I got a crash when I tried to run the binary that does that
- show an info banner -> I don't know how to do that really.
I will continue looking but I have more important issues to solve really
