By mistake I deleted the contents of the /root folder on my N900 and now I cant gain root permissions with "sudo gainroot/root/rush" and I dont want to reflash because I have very much apps and media on the phone. Thank you very much in advance!

Have you rebooted your N900 ? i think it will be regenerated after the reboot...
Good luck

The fact that /root doesn't exist should not prevent you from doing "root", "sudo gainroot", or "su".

Are you sure this is the only thing you've deleted?

Just gain root (somehow and "mkdir /root". There's nothing important in that directory anyway (root doesn't really need a home).

If you really need it, you might want to extract the SSU images. But don't know how to do it.

If you need to mkdir /root as root, you might do it via scp

If you run a linux flavor on your PC, you should be able to extract the files from the bin with... unzip.

IIRC, Winrar does the trick as well, just in case you're using the Redmond OS.

No it doesnt regen...

Here's the story:
I had to extract an archive, I issued
Code:
root
then
Code:
tar xf /path/to/archive/blabla.tar
but I forgot to
Code:
cd
to the folder and it extracted the archive in
/root folder
I realised that and without thinking I issued
Code:
rm -r *
and removed coincidentally .profile and .bashrc, now whenever i gain root permissions and I try to install any package it returns
dpkg: `ldconfig' not found on PATH.
dpkg: `start-stop-daemon' not found on PATH.
dpkg: `install-info' not found on PATH.
dpkg: `update-rc.d' not found on PATH.
dpkg: 4 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin.
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
so I need the contents of the /root folder

You may find that it will not fix all your problems.

Reflasing combined should fix without losing much data.

Its a very long procedure to reflash - reinstalling programs, copying media to and from the PC - 2-3 hours. Nevermind I made my own .bashrc and .profile and now its working
