I'm traveling to Sweden shortly for a week, and have a couple of questions regarding Telia:

1) Do they offer a smartphone internet-only prepaid sim I can use in my N900

2) How is Telia's broadband quality (specifically, in the Gothenburg area)? Decent enough to make skype international calls?

I have no idea what Telia's international calling rates are (their entire site is in Swedish, and I do not know how to speak it )

I'm open to ideas if the above is absurd

According to a new comparison by a consumer-rights-tv-show, Telia's mobile broadband is fastest overall and has the best coverage of all available mobile broadband services in Sweden.

After a quick glance at their site, you get to pay 399 kr for getting started with a prepaid mobile broadband (no voice or sms) service. The price includes "modem" and sim-card. You would still need to load the service with more money to actually get on the internet, I think.

1 day (or 0,5 GB) 39 kr
1 week (or 2 GB) 99 kr
1 month (30 days) (or 5 GB) 279 kr

EDIT: I don't not know if this would work on the N900, though. It is aimed at computers (...and the N900 is a computer, right?) and comes with a "modem" that isn't needed, of course. Anyone else know?

Yes but he is probably going to stay at the major cities, or a smaller town. So he shouldn't worry about coverage. All operators has got minimum 3 mbit.

Prepaid data+voice is difficult to find with a reasonable price.

Its either or. Comviq prepaid is the most popular voice prepaid however each mb costs around $2,1.

However, i can read here that comviq has got a special deal until 31 august where you pay maximum ~$1,1 a day with a maximum usage of 700 mb a week. You can only use the builtin browser.

They have some info in english too: http://www.telia.se/privat/international/contact/

The Telia stores are called "Telia Butik" and searching for telia butik gothenburg on maps.google.com seems to generate lots of relevant results for where to go and potentially buy your mobile internet.

For calling abroad, one should get the Comviq "Amigos" prepaid, I think.

Just ask in kiosks (or a Tele2 store) for a comviq sim card and for loading it with amigos (with either 100, 200 or 300 kr).

They state that calling the USA costs 0.95 kr/min to a landline and 1.00 kr/minute to a mobile. http://www.comviq.se/kontantkort_amigos.html

I would consider Halebop or Tele2 (with surf small).

Halebop are using the same landline as Telia thus have the same coverage but are cheaper. And they are the cheapest for abroad calls.

Tele2 is the cheapest overall and you could add the small internet package for 29 sek (200mb).

That 29 kr for 200 MB a month on Tele2 (and comviq, these two have merged) is just with a plan ("abonnemang" in swedish), not for prepaid cards ("kontantkort" in swedish), I think?

(I have "Surf small" on my N900, with a Comviq "Kompis" plan)

Edit: And yes, as AlMehdi said, Halebop is cheap to call abroad with: 0.97 kr/min to both landlines and mobiles in the USA. Compared to Tele2/Comviq "Amigos" the difference is negligible, though, so for voice you can get either. Halebop says SMS:s are free of charge to anywhere in the world, though, so if you text a lot, maybe go with Halebop.

Hi. I live in Finland, the land where the mobile phone was practically invented.

Here the most common dataplan works at a 300kbit/s speed and people turn down faster internet connections even if they cost them less.

Ain't that just ... grand?
