I'd like to give it a try..
You need to use 0.9.x, older ones will not work.

Maybe I should create a virtualbox image for you Windows users

New release. Changes:

- New theme added
- Support for automatic subtitle fetching from subtitlesource.org
- Rewrote the player part. Works way better
- Playlist loading/editing/saving feature added to offline-mode
- You can now seek precisely by dragging your finger on seekbar
- Few gestures added to player to quickly change the volume etc.
- Removed the need for hardware keys in general use

Thanks again to mtron for all the ideas and testing.

open synaptic (check that universe & multiverse Repositories are enabled) and install the packages:
libavcodec-unstripped-51
libavdevice-unstripped-52
libavformat-unstripped-52
libavutil-unstripped-49
libpostproc-unstripped-51
libswscale-unstripped-0

Code:
sudo apt-get install libavcodec-unstripped-51 libavdevice-unstripped-52 libavformat-unstripped-52 libavutil-unstripped-49 libpostproc-unstripped-51 libswscale-unstripped-0
those are builds with enabled codecs that might have patent problems in some parts of the world, which can't be shipped in the main ubuntu Repos (hence they are published in the multiverse Section). This packages will replace the "usual" builds, and after that the ubuntu vlc build worked to stream video with knots.

Anyone know if OS X 10.3.9 and VLC 0.8.6c will work on the server side?

I don't see why 10.3.9 wouldn't work if you can install up-to-date Ruby, but VLC must be 0.9.x.

Ruby shouldn't be a problem but AFAICT vlc 0.8.6c is the latest working version for 10.3.9. Shame, would be good to put my old mac-mini to some use other than file serving.

I think 0.8.6 is doable with minor changes. You'd lose the ability to follow the progress of the stream and maybe some other things. Can't make any promises, but I can take a shot at it if you want and get the server working.

Just been on irc (#videolan). It was suggested that the mac devs "were bored of maintaining the build system and GUI with only the old API provided by 10.3" and that a cli version of 0.9.x may work. If you know or could find out if the cli version will work for Knots I could try to build on my box (although I haven't done any dev on it for over three years).

Knots doesn't need the gui so it could work. If that fails, I can always try to fallback to 0.8.6. Does your mac have enough juice to handle the transcoding?
