It is called "vumeter".
what language / toolkits are you working with? We may be able to share some code or ideas.

The user interface is Qt.
The sound backend is pulseaudio.
Hence, in a nutshell, the code is a mixture of C++ and C.

Sure, would be great.

I registered a garage project "vumeter".
I'll upload the code tomorrow.

By the way, the vumeter code may not be pretty but it is GPL so just hack in it anyway you like.

I'm working with Vala and Gtk for the integration with GStreamer for audio stuff. have used Qt and C++ enough to find my way around.

I'll be sure to check it out. I'm waiting for approval on decibelmeter with garage and I'll put the source up as soon as it's there. I've a couple of works in progress on there already - both multitrack recorders demorecorder and fillmore (a port from a desktop app) the plan is to finish the port and then merge the two projects as they both have some different useful bits in them.

I'd be interested in knowing what the audio project is you are working on?

cheers

[edit] source code is now at https://garage.maemo.org/projects/decibelmeter/[/edit]

I uploaded the source code to the garage project site as well:
http://garage.maemo.org/projects/vumeter/

The other project is a simple cross platform soundboard called "StultitiaSimplex".
It is hosted on sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/stultitiasimple/
You can get more information, e.g., about the seemingly strange name, on the project web page:
http://stultitiasimple.sourceforge.net/

I just uploaded version 0.0.5 to extras-devel.
This version features an analogous dB meter.
I attached screen shots of version 0.0.3 (upper) and 0.0.5 (lower) so you can see the differences.
Attached Images

Could you please take a look at my post requesting somthing similar and see if the additional features i asked for there could be incorporated in your program?

The whole thing is pretty "hackish" as the code was "ripped" out of another software project.
Though, it should give at least some visual feedback.

Kind regards

I tried "vu-meter" , application looks very good, this analog meter is very usefull. What are the source choices for???
The program freezes when select "source.hw1"

A few suggestions to implent in next version:
1) a icon when installed. Now there is a blue aquare.
2) meter goes to 110 dB, maybe 130 is beter.
3) display backlight goes off after a few sec. Prefer to stay on.
4) portrait mode/view support.

Further i must say this is a very intresting application!

sources are the various 'sound' sources your device can see. "source.hw1" should be a Bluetooth headset microphone if connected, I suspect you don't have one paired and that's why the application freezes.

In reality, if you are only interested in measuring 'environmental' sound you probably don't want to change from the default setting.
