Try to connect the n900 to the pc in mass storage mode and check if the directory .bermuda is writable (not readonly).
This seems the only reason for me. The directory exists, so the game should save, if it cannot save it means that something prevents the file to be written.

after the update pressing s comes up with a notifcation bar that says game cannot be saved.
