As some programs from maemo5 run on N8x0 without problems, I just started wondering, was maemo4 abandonment an example of planned obsolescence by Nokia? Why couldn't N8x0 boot Fremantle? Probably answer is in these forums, but digging through it would take a lot of time and someone can most likely provide a short explanation.
Soon same fate will happen to N900. Can Harmattan be run on N900? Or maybe Fremantle can be booted on N9? Is it just an 'impossibility' for community to upgrade all packages (with closed source packages, very likely, yes)? Or is hardware the real blocking agent?

In short: Fremantle uses GLES. N8x0 has the hardware but the drivers are not usable (and not officially available).

Aegis is a blocker. For the record, I actually tried doing this on my N900 using the MeeGo kernel. I ended up having to reflash as Harmattan apparently swaps on mtd5.

I think this topic is still relevant.

Only hildon-desktop uses GLES. And there are proof-of-concept that it does not need to use GLES, but it can be done on software (but it will need more work to be usable): http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=83442
