Unlock your Dell Streak, and open the application launcher. Scroll to "Market," and tap on the icon to launch the Android Market. Type in: "terminal emulator," and press "Enter." Select "Android Terminal Emulator" from the list, then tap "Free" under "Install." Tap "OK" to accept the permissions, and wait for the app to install on your Streak.

Press the "Home" button, then open the Application Launcher again. Tap on the icon for "Android Terminal Emulator." This will load up the Linux terminal command prompt. If you see a "#" off the bat, you have root access. If you see a "$" you will need to run a command to check if you have root access.

Type: "su," then press "Enter." If the command prompt changes from "$" to "#" then you have root access. You might need to allow the Super User app access after you enter the command -- "su" stands for Super User.

it depends on what version of android its running i.e the dell version of 2.2 or a carrier version
universal androot (you'll need to google it ) if its a carrier version
z4mod z4root (i think its in market place)if its dell, but be careful with it.
sorry i dont have anything android to check
after a month with the desire z when it first came out put me off.

Actually, the easier way to tell is to just go to your application list and look to see if you have the SuperUser application. If you have it, then you can gain escalated privileges.. if it's missing, then you aren't yet rooted.
FAR simpler to just look for SuperUser in your app drawer because any app (including the su command) will depend on that app being available to provide those escalated privileges.
As for HOW to go about rooting, that depends on the device. Which device are you guys interested in rooting? I've rooted three devices personally, so far.

den in usa wanted to root his dell streak, i dont have an android device any more to root, though i did root my desire z using an auto root app, but i have heard that now some auto root apps are either only working temporary or not at all

There are three common ways with that device... from easiest to hardest (which is still insultingly easy)... the success rate of each of these depends on which version of Android OS you're running--I would assume the XDA forum method would be the best (the one marked 'the RIGHT way', but I used z4root on my Galaxy Tab and it's the braindead easiest way to toggle rooted on or off):

Be careful with rooted android devices. There are many malicious code and these can get far worse with a little SU action! :S
