IMO it's the best XMPP client for mobile (a lot of the others don't support the XEPs that give feature parity with proprietary messengers).

This seems like it might be the solution. Anyone fancy writing a Telepathy interface for it?

Phone has to be on and connected to the internet
It needs an official client anyway...
Unfortunately it seems to me that whatsapp now is a closed system in a bulletproof way...
