Sir Arthur C. Clarke died today.

A small but nevertheless not insignificant part of me died with him. Everybody remembers him for "2001", fewer as the "inventor" of geosynchronous satellites, for me it'll allways be "the City and the Stars", a lesser known book of him that introduced me to the wonderful world of sci-fi.

His best known quote: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." I guess he's about to find out...

Truly a sad loss.

Can anybody not listen to Blue Danube Waltz without thinking of 2001?

I was just reading a report on 2001 I created many years ago for a Huminities class at SP(J)C. I watched the movie many times.
I'm sorry Dave... I'm afraid I can't do that.

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
R.I.P. Sir Arthur C. Clarke

I was extremely saddened to read the news. He was an amazing man.

Maybe he's seeing the Fountains of Paradise with his own eyes, even if probably not in a religious sense.
Please never forget his first law: "When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."
It applies to internet tablets, too.

Yes, residents of Vienna. It's played on TV/radio at midnight on New Year and everyone opens their windows and you can hear it drifting over the city.

Trivia aside, A C Clarke was a great writer. I think I've read everything he wrote.

I don't know how many people nowadays remember it, but during the 1980s he made some really scary documentaries about the paranormal which used to scare me so much I couldn't sleep! (Mind you, I was little back then...)

One of the programmes used to open with a picture of a crystal skull... brrr...

It was a long time ago so I'm not sure, but I think it might have been.

It was at the beginning of all the episodes even if they didn't deal with crystal skulls though, very frightening when you're little.
