Why do you think that?

It works; and, given the hardware limitations and bugs in the tablets, it's highly unlikely to ever work any better than it does now.

Is TeX dead?

Mplayer does indeed work very well, except for one thing on my 770 2007HE: the versions starting from .26 do not keep the backlight on when playing a movie. The dev is aware of my problem, but before I begin many compilations of mplayer in order to find what causes this, does anyone experience the same problem?

Thanks for your feedback.

I can say for sure that on my tablet mplayer DOES keep the backlight on (i.e. does not dim the screen). N810 runnng Diablo 5.2008.43-7, mplayer 1.0rc1-maemo.29.n8x0. HTH

@dcy

I can confirm having the same issue on the N770 with 2007HE. Otherwise it works fine. Please let me know if you or anyone else finds a solution to this

This is the changelog between version .25 and .26, and
Siarhei Siamashka (the dev of maemo mplayer) reckons that he does not see what could cause this. Me neither, but I am no specialist.

The idea would be to compile several versions of mplayer, starting with half of the patches and see if there is a problem, i.e. by bisecting.

For those with more time than me, version .25 is revision 321 in SVN, version .26 is revision 335.

@dcy

Do you know how one acquires an older version of mplayer for the 770 ? I looked on the mplayer maemo garage project page, for which the releases (for the 770) seem to jump from '18', to 24/26 (which look like they are only for the n800). On Ver '18' mp4s are really choppy so its no good for me.

in the extra-devel repository of bora, if I remember correctly.

Use a web browser.

Thanks for that.

Well I tried installing .25 and can confirm that my backlight now stays on. Unfortunately the mp4's are really really choppy again :/ I guess I will just have to wait for a fix for this.

I'm guessing something needs to be fixed for MPlayer to properly run on N810 WiMax, it chocks on the same movies/SD-card which regular N810 played just fine.

Solution found for the screen-blanking problem: in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf, ensure that the first line is

ao=gst,esd,sdl

and not ao=gst,sdl
