The provided adapter is rated as 5V, while I found a dc-4 compatible car charger that is rated at 5.7V. I also saw various usb power adapters (i.e. 12V dc or 220/110V ac to usb) rated at 6V.
Are 5.7 or 6V safe or will they destroy my n800?
And since these compatible adapters are usually exact replicas of the original (voltage regulation is not rocket science), is the original dc-4 also rated at 5.7V?

Page 17 of the the Nokia 2-mm DC Charging Interface Specification says:

6.1 Charger voltage measurement

When a charger is connected to the mobile device, the device's system will start the charger-recognition procedure by checking the charger voltage with 1 – 2 mA current. Identification is based on measured average voltage and waveform: 4.65 V – 5.20 V is identified as a special charger and 5.5 V - 9.3 V is identified as a standard charger.
