Ok, guys, I'll need a little help here. I've got a ralink ra3370 b/g/n USB -> wifi adapter, and I'm trying to setup a windows 7 PC with a hidden ad-hoc network that will allow my n900 to connect to the internet over it, and have it encrypted with WPA2-PSK.

There are a couple of catches with this, which I need help with:
1. I can't figure out how to have a hidden ad-hoc network, so it's not broadcasting it's SSID everywhere.
2. Sharing the PC's internet connection with the N900 may be a problem; the PC has a static IP in the 192.168.12 range. I can find an unused IP in this range, but I doubt it'll help.

Let me know of some ideas I can use to get this working. I've got signifigant experience with my N900 and wouldn't be adverse to setting up a script to enable/disable the connection if needed, but I'm not so savvy about W7(I've been using Linux myself for years)...

I haven't found guides on how to create a hidden ad-hoc network but from some of the guides I have found when you create a wireless hosted network it will provide DHCP service which may assign a random IP address, etc but with details pointing to your computer.

Here is what I have found which may work: http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials...-Windows-7.htm

Also I don't run windows, let alone have very little experience with windows 7 but hopefully this guide should get you started.

well i can help you with that....i'm windows 7 user so this is the step....

1.open networks and sharing center
2.create a new networks but choose
a.set up a new connection or network....
3.a popup will appear then pick
a.set up a wireless ad-hoc (computer to computer) network....
4.then another popup will appears...just press next...
5.the next popup will give you an option to...
a.name the ad-hoc network
b.pick either using open network/WEP or WPA (use WPA)
c.enter your password
d.tick save this network & press next...
6.it will save this network then you can use this network as an ad-hoc to any computer or even your n900....

a reminder : this ad-hoc only works if you pc have its own internet connection...if you use your ralink as an adapter to connect to your wireless networks then ad-hoc connection will not be posible...

Hey Robbie,

please keep in mind, that our little gagdet will (99% sure) not be capable of an ad-hoc connection with WPA. But I did not test it, only with WEP. And one more thing: I also was not able to set up ad-hoc with hidden SSID, only broadcasting worked.
These experiences with XP and PR1.3.

On PC, You will need to activate ICS on the connection which provides internet. On the other connection (which is granted ICS), You will get a DHCP on 192.168.1.xxx range. It took me a few attempts to get it up
Please feel free to contact me on any problems...

Why the hell not? I mean, we have enough control over the driver to do frigging packet injection, why can't we have it connect to an arbitrary other device using whatever security method we choose(that the driver has ability for, anyway)? I mean, I understand that Maemo might not have boxes for it, and I may need to do something like this to give it a proper IP and get it connecting right, but I'm sure it's possible.

See, this is sort of a problem. The PC has a wired connection with a static IP in the 192.168.12 range, and then my wireless connection. I can do anything I want to make the wireless connection work, but can't change the wired connection.
if the PC was running Linux, I know I'd be able to do it easily - I did it with USB networking easily enough - but as I said, I have no experience hacking w7 into what I want to do.
