Similar functionality has Toggle PSM.
If PSM is enabled than Wi-Fi is automatically disconnected when it's no necessary.

Just tap the status bar. Although I don't see why you need to turn off to prolong your battery - I have WiFi/Network on permanently and get 2 days solid no prob.

I'd like to have something where we can keep the wifi enabled but disable mobile data. Similar to what I can do in Symbian Belle on my N8. That way when I am near a wifi spot it can connect but when I am not near a wifi spot I don't necessarily want it using my mobile data.

Settings->Internet connection->Edit networks->[selectyourmobiledata]->Use automaticly->OFF

Or Settings->Flightmode ;-)

Harder way: you can just use iptables to drop all trafic to phonet0.

I know there are ways to do this currently. What I would like to see would be an easy way to toggle it via a quick button press. Similar to what Symbian Belle has. This might be accomplished by writing a script and making a shortcut.

What would be nice is to be able to toggle background connections on or off easily
