I think that'd make it RMS-approved.
We're getting a bit off topic now but that's a great idea. I'd obviously go with the jumper solution but I'm not sure that the FSF would go with it. The irony here is that by neutering the ability to flash, you're taking away a freedom. They should build two versions: one with flashable baseband firmware and the other a less free FSF-approved version.

Now what's that old adage...

A fool and his money are soon parted.
(It's apparently pretty old, nearly five hundred years. I wonder what the late medieval or early modern equivalent of electronic tat would have been.)

Devil's advocate here...

"Who's the more foolish; the fool or the fool who follows him?" - Obi Wan Kenobi

Waiting on a product that was promised ages ago to grant a freedom that's not truly free nor open, or dependency on an ecosystem that's as closed as a jail that it requires something called a "jail break" to make it more "free"? Choice of two evils - people will tend to choose the evil the know.

Either way, it seems as if they both do not deliver a freedom that's true and pure. It's just perceived as such mainly due to nostalgia and a terminal.

Or something...

</devil's advocate>

There are many types of freedom. One project may promise the freedom to wait forever for a product that will never come. Another one the freedom to access the services you depend on Right Now™. One offers you the freedom of the terminal. Another one the freedom from the shackles of the terminal.

Ooh, now that is a mind-boggling concept
I wonder if people following freedom1 and freedom2 will ever understand the viewpoints of each other?
