Good article, one error spotted: The article claimed that Maemo and Mer uses '.ipkg' packages (like e.g. Zaurus).

Edit: Which a reader there had already commented on! Fanoush, I guess?

Nice article. Continued thanks and kudos for Mer, and I'm following the best I can.

About this posting:

I would be most appreciative if you could explain what (if anything) the UI change implies. Especially for us ordinary users who may want to have a hildon-like UI or run Diablo apps on top of Mer on a non-Nokia device.

iirc, mer is able to switch ui's, so the user can select what one wants to have.

Basically it means a different hildon desktop layout. It is an adaptation of wazds ideas on his blog. It is in essence a resolution independent layout with a 52px high marquee on top, as wide as the screen and no sidebar.

App wise it shouldn't have any effect. Same hildon api as in Fremantle. It is also an experimental layout, so it is up for discussion.

It's still Hildon. It's a configuration of Hildon Desktop which is better aligned with Ubuntu MID and Fremantle (i.e. a single top bar) whilst experimenting with some differences (no space wasted on a title, no accidental window closing).

See, for example, these screenshots from the Fremantle alpha SDK:

In the LWN article, I caught this interesting quote from Quim Gil (emphasis added):
From our point of view it is much easier and sensible to react to specific requests with a concrete output (e.g. 'please allow the redistribution of these Nokia binaries so we can try to deliver a Maemo 5 community edition for the N800/N810'). This is also true for platform components that are actually not owned by Nokia, for instance TI's graphics acceleration drivers for OMAP2, where we are trying also to help getting a 'community edition' of such drivers.
I had thought those efforts were dead in the water -- apparently not.

My understanding is that Nokia is asking that those drivers be made available for a back-port of Mer to N8x0 devices only. They are not asking that they be opened up entirely. (Of course, others may have direct knowledge of this.)
