All i need to know is the actual device or component it is stored in and if replaced can it be programmed using the usual method or if it is pre-programmed (which i think unlikely) before it is strapped to the device.

Mostly the specs far exceed the N900s, apart from internal storage at only 16GB. BUT there's a big fat catch: The bootloader is locked.

Motorola has promised to unlock future bootloaders, maybe we'll hit pay dirt with the Droid 4.
I checked out a D3 at a verizon store and I really liked the keyboard. Arguably better than N950. It was very responsive. Wasn't crazy about motoblur with battery sucking animations (just found out that can be turned off) and bloatware. 512MB RAM disappointing but given how the N900 performed with half that could still be OK. Hopefully it can be rooted or bootloader unlocked at some point soon. I would be happy with Maemo on it let alone Meego...

EDIT: Forgot to mention many not happy with camera. It does have many features not present on N950 like HDMI port.

Hopefully now that Google has bought Motorola's phone division, we'll see less bootloader locking and phone branding:

Take a look at this, a company called Fusion Garage is building open phones:

That model couldn't be an N900 replacement without a keyboard, but maybe just pointing out that there's a market for such a thing could convince them to build one...

Seems some Android mod. It has no specs, no info about libc and other libs or even terminal emulator.
