It has something to do with the SIM not being recognized by your phone. I too had this problem a couple of weeks ago because it seems my SIM was beginning to fail. Had it changed and the icon disappeared.

this comes on my phone when there is no sim card inserted...when ever there is a problem with the sim i get no signal but this sign only comes when no sim is inserted( in my case at least)

Or just try another SIM and if it works all it means is that you need a new SIM to replace the bad one... And all that icon means is that the N900 thinks there is no SIM inserted.
